Anderson thanks The Daily

Thanks, Daily
Kicker John Anderson, who has struggled a bit with PATs and short field goals this season, credited The Daily -- albeit slightly -- for his performance Saturday. The article was written by columnist Derek Belt and printed in The Game Daily on Oct. 19. Belt questioned Anderson's ability to make the short kicks consistently. On Saturday, Anderson made all four of his kicks, including the game-winning 30-yard field goal against ASU.
"There was an article in the school newspaper that fired me up," he said.
Anderson suffered a hip flexor last week and was unable to kick before the game. "I was joking with the trainers before the game because I was the first kicker to get a shot," he said.
Neuheisel decided to use senior kicker Jim Skurski on kickoffs, keeping Anderson on PATs and field goals. On the last kick, Anderson had no doubt the ball would split the uprights.
"It could have been the best field goal I've kicked all year," he said.
Axman on the call
Last week, in the game against Arizona, offensive coordinator Keith Gilbertson felt some chest discomfort. He underwent an angiogram -- a test that checks for arterial blockage -- last week and the results returned negative.
The 53-year old Gilbertson made the trip to Tempe but relinquished the play-calling duties to quarterbacks coach Steve Axman. Gilbertson, however, was still in the coaches' booth, focusing more on the overall game plan than individual situations.
"I thought he did a great job," Gilbertson said of Axman's performance Saturday.
