Jane can't get the monkey off her back
November 1, 2001
Still turn up the radio for "Been Caught Stealing?" Still remember what Ritual de lo Habitual means? Then Nov. 7 is your lucky day, because Jane's Addiction is on yet another reunion tour -- the second one since the band's '91 breakup. This time, Martyn Lenoble from Porno for Pyros, another one of lead vocalist Perry Farrell's old projects, will replace Jane's original bassist, Eric Avery.
Jane's Addiction started in the early '80s with Farrell Avery, from Psi Com, on bass, Stephen Perkins on drums and Dave Navarro (who later became a member of Red Hot Chili Peppers) on guitar.
Despite the fact that it's been a decade since the band dissolved, fans remain ardently faithful to the group and most college dorm rooms probably contain at least one Jane's CD. In fact, it was the breakup of the band that caused Farrell to create Lollapalooza, which he helped organize for several years afterward. Leaving the band at its height of popularity, the members had no trouble finding more work.
In '92, Farrell and Perkins began Porno for Pyros, and Navarro and Avery formed Deconstruction shortly before Navarro joined the Chili Peppers in '93. Four years later, the members were drawn back together as Navarro was readying to quit the Peppers and Porno for Pyros was being dissolved. Even then, Avery was unwilling to reunite (he was busy with his new band, Polar Bear), so Flea from the Peppers filled in as bassist.
In honor of the reunion, Jane was once more addicted to releasing albums. Kettle Whistle consisted of some favorite live performances, along with some new tracks. Many fans' hopes were dashed as Jane, yet again, got the monkey off her back. But two years later in 1999, Farrell included some Jane's songs on his CD Rev, along with some songs from Porno for Pyros and a few solo tracks.
Now the band is back again in Seattle on Nov. 7. Fans hoping for a permanent reunion shouldn't hold their breath. Not only did this fail to happen on the last tour, but Farrell and Navarro both released solo albums this year (Navarro's Trust No One was put out a month before Farrell's Song Yet to Be Sung), signaling that they are very much set in their own lives.
Still, Jane's Addiction obviously contains an unwavering devotion from old members. It isn't just Jane's Addiction anymore. It's everyone's addiction -- especially the band members': They can't seem to stop reuniting. And all of their fans are thankful.
Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster for $40.50. The show is at 8 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the Stadium Exhibition Center.
