Show us a little more respect!

Today's staff editorial was going to be our Editorial Board's endorsement in the Seattle mayoral race. The campaign offices of the two leading candidates, however, seem to consider The Daily to be a nuisance, rather than the leading media outlet reaching students at the UW. Admittedly, our reporters do call to check facts, verify schedules and ask for candidates' positions on issues. This is our job. Given that each candidate carries significant baggage -- Nickels, his controversial leadership of the troubled Sound Transit, and Sidran, his controversial civil-rights record as city attorney -- their offices' impatience with UW students does not inspire.

While we understand that the candidates and their campaign staffs are very busy as the close race enters its final days, we also think they should recognize the significance of the student vote in what is shaping up to be an extremely tight finish. Not only might the student vote prove decisive, students are also the leaders of the future. The fire of our idealism is not fueled when our experience with leading political campaigns breeds cynicism rather than respect.

Nickels and Sidran have promised us their replies to our brief questionnaires by Sunday. We anticipate they will treat our request with more respect than we have received from their staffs. If we don't hear from them, we may find ourselves taking a hard look at write-in candidate Christal Wood. While Wood appears to have no realistic chance of winning the most votes, at least she returns our calls.
