Women take 5th at Pac-10 championships
April 26, 2001
The Husky women's golf team turned up the heat in the Arizona desert Wednesday to claim fifth place at the Pac-10 championships in Tempe. An even-par final round of 288 was the second-lowest round of the tournament and launched the Huskies into fifth with a three-day total of 890.
Second-ranked Arizona won the tournament with a total of 873. The defending national champions shot a 1-under 287 in the final round to snag the Pac-10 title for the second year in a row. Stanford finished in second place just three shots back, highlighted by a 1-under 287 Wednesday. Host Arizona State began the day in a tie for first with Arizona, but dropped to third with a final-round 297. Southern California finished in fourth, 13 shots back.
Husky junior Kelli Kamimura shot a 2-under 70 in the final round to finish the tournament with a 1-under 215 and capture third place. It was her second consecutive round under par. Though Kamimura had won twice this season, third was her best finish ever at the Pac-10s.
Senior Elisha Au rebounded from an 81 on Tuesday to fire a 3-under 69 in the final round. It was the lowest round of the tournament for the Huskies and allowed Au to pick up an 18th-place finish. Sophomore Louise Friberg played consistent golf and finished in a tie for 25th with a 227. Freshman Lindsay Morgan shot a 73, her best round of the tournament, and placed 36th with a 230. Freshman Bianca Clark shot a final-round 80 to place 48th.
Arizona's Lorena Ochoa and Natalie Gulbis tied for first in the individual competition with a total of 3-under 213 for the tournament. After both players parred the first hole of a sudden-death playoff, Ochoa drained a birdie putt on the par-4 352-yard ninth to pick up medalist honors and a sweep for the Wildcats.
The Huskies' fifth-place finish should qualify them for the NCAA West Regional tournament to be held May 10-12, but they await selection next week.
