Love-all for Cancer Society

As fraternity tennis players battled each other yesterday at the Gamma Phi Beta sorority's tennis tournament fundraiser at Denny Field, Emily Reifel watched on, admiringly.

"They are so intense! I love it," said Reifel, a sophomore premajor.

Theta Chi fraternity players Matthew Sackman and Chris Camarda beat Chuck Thompson and Mike Kirchoff of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity in the final match. Thompson and Kirchoff had advanced to the finals minutes earlier, beating another Theta Chi team -- Matt Reus and Blake Pottle.

According to Hannah Moore, a sophomore who helped coordinate the event, fraternities expressed interest in a tennis tournament as a fundraiser during a survey conducted by Gamma Phi Beta.

Freshman Reus appreciated the competition. "There isn't anywhere to play tennis besides the UW team."

Dozens of members of both fraternities showed up to cheer their teams.

"They could be drinking beers. They came out to watch tennis instead," said Selena Kwik, a freshman Gamma Phi Beta member.

"I thought it would be a good way to get the frats involved," added Reifel, the Gamma Phi Beta philanthropy chair. "They're really competitive."

Teams from 17 fraternities paid $50 each to participate in the three-day event. The money will go to Gamma Phi Beta's philanthropy, the American Cancer Society. Last year, it raised $11,000 for the cancer society.

"We're trying to top that," said Moore.

undraising for the American Cancer Society, which includes house spaghetti dinners, selling Mariners' programs at Safeco Field and a letter-writing campaign to house alumni, will culminate on June 2 and 3 with the 24-hour Relay for Life at Memorial Stadium.

"Hopefully, the tennis tournament will become a tradition," said Reifel.

Gamma Phi Beta members are required to attend the Relay for Life, which they have supported for the last six years. This year, their participation will be dedicated to Chauncey Jones, a UW student who passed away due to leukemia in February. His girlfriend, Lauren Eagle, was a Gamma Phi Beta member.
