Cayetano rains on Husky hit parade in Cougar win
April 30, 2001
Southpaw Justin Cayetano held the hot-hitting Huskies to five hits Sunday as Washington State avoided a sweep with a 7-2 victory. After exploding for 23 runs and 32 hits in the first two games of the series, both wins, Washington's offense failed to support starter Sean White, who fell to 3-1.
"We didn't do anything today," said Husky coach Ken Knutson. "We didn't adjust to (Cayetano's) pitching style. Our approach was poor. Instead of going to the opposite field, we rolled over a lot of balls against a lefty who doesn't throw that hard. He's given us trouble in the past."
The three-game series with WSU (15-29 overall, 6-12 Pac-10) afforded Washington (24-15, 5-10) a chance for much-needed conference wins against the worst team in the Pac-10.
"If we had swept them, we would have been in good shape to start the comeback," said sophomore lefty Tyler Shepple. "We still can. We're happy with two wins, but not as happy as we could be. This was the sophomore class' first loss (to WSU). We were hoping to get through our entire careers without losing to them."
Second baseman Marc Rittenhouse accounted for both Washington runs on Sunday. In the first inning, he launched a solo shot over the scoreboard in left field. He then tripled in the ninth and came home on Jay Garthwaite's double.
Washington started the weekend off strong. Friday's game was postponed for a day due to rain with the Huskies up 7-6 in the sixth inning. On Saturday morning, Jay Garthwaite's grand slam and Tila Reynolds' two-run single helped produce an eight-run eighth inning that secured a 15-8 victory.
In the second game, Tyler Davidson's three-run homer broke a 5-5 tie and propelled the Huskies to an 8-6 victory. Starter Shawn Kohn (5-1) earned the win by allowing five runs, three unearned, in seven and one-third strong innings. Rittenhouse went three-for-five, while Garthwaite hit his second home run of the day, a two-run blast.
The team will stay in Eastern Washington for a couple more days before heading home. It visits old Pac-10 North rivals Gonzaga for two games today and Tuesday.
"We need these games to fill up our schedule," Knutson said. "With more players back, we'll be able to progress and hopefully rebound today."
