Not many Huskies of the Washington men's tennis team survived the first round of singles play in the Pac-10 championships at the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament this weekend. Straight off the bat, all but one -- sophomore Dillon Ruby -- were eliminated.

"It was a rough one for the Dawgs," said senior captain Jeremy Berman. "But if anything positive came out of this weekend, it was Dillon Ruby. And we had some very close first-round matches."

Ruby played himself through the first two rounds of singles action on the first day by defeating opponents from USC and California. In the quarterfinals, Ruby played Scotty Scott of Stanford and took care of him, 6-3, 7-6, to advance to the semis. Scott's loss to Ruby was avenged by teammate Scott Lipsky in the semis, however, when he defeated Ruby 6-0, 6-2, to advance to the final against his teammate Ali Ansari.

Ruby also advanced to the semifinals in doubles with fellow sophomore Ari Strasberg. They were defeated in the semis by Olivier Charroin and Pim Van Mele of ASU, 8-4.

The Washington women's team saw a pair of Huskies advance all the way to the finals. Junior Erin Boisclair and freshman Erin Hoe advanced to the finals of the doubles tournament with a win over WSU's Lorena Arias and Moniek Van de Ven, 8-4.

Hoe also advanced to the semifinal round of the singles tournament. She defeated Catherine Lynch of California, 6-1, 6-2, on Friday to reach Saturday's semifinal match against USC's Krissy Hamilton. She then fell to Hamilton, 6-4, 7-5.

Both Husky teams will now prepare for the Pac-10 regional championships this next week. The sites and opponents have yet to be determined.
