Golfers enter third-straight NCAA championships
May 30, 2001
The fact that the Husky men's golf team is seeded 30th out of 30 teams in the NCAA finals means little.
The Huskies finished 10th and last in the West Regional championships that ended May 19. However, the only thing that matters today is that they begin the NCAA championships at the Duke University Golf Course in Durham, N.C. tied with the rest of the field.
For the third-straight year the UW has reached the biggest tournament in collegiate golf, and the team's fourth-place finish in 1999 reminds the golf world that the Huskies are capable of making a statement to the nation. On the other hand, last year's 30th-place finish shows that the team is capable of an early exit when the field is pared to 15 after 36 holes.
The Huskies boast one of the youngest lineups in the championships with three freshmen and two sophomores filling the UW squad. Freshmen Corey Prugh, Brock Mackenzie and Joey Ramos hold the three lowest stroke averages on the team. John Robertson and Derek Berg both participated in the 2000 NCAA championships. Prugh placed fourth at the Pac-10 championships, breaking the four-round record held by coach O.D. Vincent by four strokes with a 275.
Mackenzie is the highest-ranked Husky in the GolfWeek individual standings, coming in at 81st. The Huskies are one of 11 teams in the tournament this week without an individual in the top 75.
Golf power East Tennessee State is the top seed in the tournament and Arizona State is the highest-seeded Pac-10 team, coming in at third.
