The NCAA championships began Wednesday; and on the first day of competition, three Huskies saw some action.

Senior David Bazzi ran in the 10,000-meter and finished eighth, with a time of 29:53.26, earning himself all-American honors for the first time in his UW career. The eighth-place finish is Bazzi's NCAA career best. He placed 12th in 5,000-meter at the 2001 NCAA indoor championships and 12th in the 5,000 at the 2000 outdoor championships as well. Bazzi will look to garner further success when he competes in this year's 5,000 on Friday at 8 p.m.

The Huskies were also represented in a shorter distance. This year marks the fifth NCAA championship for senior sprinter Ja'Warren Hooker. The experience appeared to pay off as he cruised into the final in the 200-meter dash, finishing second in his heat. His qualifying time of 20.46 is seventh overall going into the final round.

While Hooker relied on his experience on the track, sophomore Brad Walker had no such luxury on the field. In his first-ever NCAA outdoor-championships appearance, he finished tied for 12th in the pole-vault final, clearing a height of 16-10 3/4. Walker earned all-American status during the indoor season.

Action resumes today beginning with the 110-meter hurdles event of the decathlon at noon. While the Huskies are not represented in the decathlon, senior Anna Aoki and sophomore Kate Bradshaw will both compete in the 10,000-meter.
