An interview with Bruce Campbell
July 11, 2001
Bruce Campbell was gracious enough to speak with The Daily in a phone interview before his appearance at University Book Store.
How does it feel to star in your very own video game?
No different from starring in a movie.
What has Keanu Reeves got that you don't got?
I dunno. Better manager, maybe. Other than that, nothing.
When is Sam Raimi going to do another Bruce Campbell movie?
Whenever he gets around to it. We're both big boys, we do our own things. We don't have power breakfasts to figure out when we're going to work together next.
You're going to be in Jim Carrey's next movie ... I was just wondering if you thought you could out-mug Jim Carrey?
I wouldn't want to try it. He's got a pretty rubber face, man. I think he spends more time practicing in front of a mirror than I do.
Of the Ash characters in each of the Evil Dead movies, which was your favorite to play?
The last one, because he's the most fully formed. He's a full-on hero/leader/idiot ...
And the role-model for millions.
Yeah, millions of disturbed teenagers.
Is it possible to make a bad zombie movie?
Well ... there's bad and then there's bad. Boring is bad. Here's my theory: Bad is OK as long as everyone's trying to do well ... You set out to make a bad movie and you're just an asshole. You can't try to make a cheeseball, crappy horror film. Evil Dead was the surefire combination of first-time director, first-time actor, first-time writers, first-time cameraman and all shot on 16-mm ... but I think (with a lot of independent horror films) there's a youthful enthusiasm that makes up for the lack of experience.
You guys do good DVD commentaries.
It's no different than sitting down on a Saturday night with a beer watching a movie. We tend to talk through movies now.
If they ever let you direct your own movie, will you cast Sam Raimi as the lead in order to torture him as much as possible?
Sounds perfect. As much pain inflicted on Sam as possible.
Who's your favorite Stooge?
Shemp. Far and above. He's certainly the ugliest Stooge. Curly's too easy. Larry's a close second. He gets the thankless job of, "Hey, whatcha mean by that?" and then getting hit. He's kind of the anchor. Moe's too easy too. It's too easy to be the mean guy, but Shemp is very underrated.

Bruce Campbell is wonderful. He has done many films, but I will always cherrish his role in Herbie the Love Bug. Please check out the comments on www.lovebugcentral.com

Operation Herbie volunteers visit sick children in their homes and help out at events; proving a little goes a long way, as Herbie drivers pose for pictures and hand out memorabilia for families and children going through traumatic times. Founded in 2003, Operation Herbie has helped raise money and awareness for Celiac Disease, The Burn Foundation, and Make A Wish, among others.
“We decided to come up with a group and a Web site. We then got so much feedback from people all over the country who share the love for Herbie as well,” says Bob Croesus of www.lovebugcentral.com. “We want to put a smile on children’s faces and raise money at the same time.”
