Unwound -- Leaves Turn Inside You
July 4, 2001
Leaves Turn Inside You is the new Unwound album, adhering to the band's particular penchant for bilious, monotone vocals, distorted instrumental effects and unusual beat structures (and weird song titles). Retaining an aesthetic deeply rooted in the punk-rock ethos, Unwound remains an excellent trio of musicians unfettered and unaffected by trends.
For more than 10 years, Unwound has churned out powerful, textural music that is intelligent without being pretentious, and assaultive without being redundant. Its live shows are nothing short of brilliant, and the chemistry between drummer Sara Lund, bassist Vern Rumsey and guitarist/vocalist Justin Trosper comes off as structured, but not overly rehearsed or choreographed. Attending an Unwound show or listening to one of its albums can actually be a profound awakening to people who perhaps aren't all that cognizant of eclectic, innovative rock music.
Unwound formed in 1991 at the onset of the Seattle music craze. Very much like that famous band from Aberdeen, it had its humble beginnings in Tumwater, Wash. From the start, Unwound has been on famed Olympia indie label Kill Rock Stars, home of uncompromising bands such as Bikini Kill, godsheadSilo and the Thrones.
Leaves Turn Inside You is Unwound's seventh full-length record and its first album in three years. The enhanced double CD also features videos for the songs "Radio Gra" and "Scarlette."
Unwound tours this fall and will be coming to and playing two shows at Graceland this Saturday, July 30, with the Ex and exBestFriends as openers.
