Hungary isn't so bad

I was very excited the first time I saw Michael van Henley's articles about his experiences in Hungary (Nov. 20). However, I was quickly disappointed by something that might not be noticed by most people. As a homesick Hungarian, I couldn't help but feel hurt by the fact that he seemed to have nothing positive to say about my country. His portrayal of Hungarians as uncompassionate, and the characterization of the language as simply impossible, was, I believe, unjust.

I do not want to go into a detailed counterargument, but I believe he has taken events that, unfortunately, occur in most countries; he made them appear to be unique to Hungary. For example, I have always had a similar notion about New Yorkers, especially since my Dad got mugged in broad daylight -- and no one helped him. But I realize this was just a random and unfortunate event that could happen in many places. Since I first came to the United States, I have taken numerous friends back to visit with me, and they all say that they had a life-changing experience. Some of them even plan to move there someday.

My country has a lot to offer, and I wish van Henley would consider sharing some of his positive experiences as well. I know he did not mean to create a negative picture. But unfortunately, that is what has happened. I look forward to reading about some of the good things that happened to him there. And by the way, "hello" is actually spelled "helo," not "hallo."
