Hundreds of goldfish found during Drumheller draining

When not running, Drumheller Fountain is usually inhabited by ducks and seagulls. Last Friday, the usual suspects filled the more-than half-empty fountain, along with a few new additions: maintenance workers in orange vests and waders armed with fish nets and a small boat.

During the draining and inspection of the fountain, workers patrolled the nearly drained fountain attempting to catch fish living in the moat underneath the fountain. The fish ranged in size from guppies to koy-sized goldfish.

The fish are believed to be from former students who dump them in the fountain. Maintenance workers suspect the fish found their way into the moat underneath Drumheller where they continued to live and grow.

In order to lure the fish out from underneath the fountain, a maintenance worker went into the moat attempting to scare the fish into the main fountain where other workers waited to capture them with nets.

After being caught, the fish were placed into several buckets on a small boat inside the fountain. The estimated 200 saved fish were then contained in a larger bin and taken to the campus fishery center.

"We're going to try and save as many as we can," said Ken Rogers, maintenance supervisor of facilities services.

The fountain is scheduled to be completely drained Wednesday.
