Huskies trapped in 7th at Pac-10 championships
April 24, 2002
By setting such high goals for itself in the Pac-10 championships, the Washington women's golf team may have fallen victim to its own pressure. The Huskies remain in seventh place after the second round at the Walla Walla Country Club in eastern Washington.
"We've been playing well, but I think we got a little too excited," said senior Kelli Kamimura.
Her teammate, junior Louise Friberg, had similar thoughts.
"We are disappointed because we thought we could do better," Friberg said. "We have to learn not to get ahead of ourselves."
In the overall standings, Arizona still sits at the top, but UCLA overtook USC by five strokes and Arizona State moved up two spots to fourth.
Washington is only three strokes behind sixth-place Stanford, but 15 strokes behind the Wildcats.
Individually for the Huskies, sophomore Lindsay Morgan is now the team leader, sitting at sixth place overall after shooting an even par 72. Morgan has a total of 148 after 36 holes and is only two strokes off of ASU's Jimin Kang and Arizona's Laura Myerscough.
Friberg, who was the lead Husky after the first round, dropped from ninth to 13th after shooting a 79 for a total of 153.
"I started out very bad, but toward the end I managed to pull myself out," Friberg said. "Right now I'm shooting to make the top-10 individually, which I think is possible."
Kamimura has improved her spot in the rankings after going from 36th to a four-way tie for 22nd. She has a total of 155 after shooting a 75 Tuesday and an 80 in the first round. The Huskies' top-ranked player going into the tournament, Kamimura is not happy with the way she has been playing.
"I'm kind of tired of playing bad," Kamimura said bluntly. "I put a lot of pressure on myself and my swing has just not been right lately."
Junior Michelle Grafos is in a three-way tie with two Arizona players for 34th. Grafos shot an 80 yesterday to bring her total to 159. Freshman Paige Mackenzie sits a little further back, tied for 42nd with a WSU player. Mackenzie improved her game yesterday. After shooting an 84 in the first round, she shot a 77 to give her a score of 161.
Even with another day spent in seventh place, the Huskies have not lost all hope of a better finish.
"I still think we have a chance to do well," Kamimura said. "If we were going to have an off week, this is a better time to do it than two weeks from now at (NCAA) regionals."
