The No. 19 women's tennis team hopes to end the season on a positive note after a rough stretch that has seen the Huskies drop seven consecutive matches.

The Pac-10 championships, which start today and conclude Sunday, are broken up into 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. Each school has three guaranteed spots in the singles division and one in the doubles division. A selection committee composed of coaches decides who gets the five wildcard singles spots and seven wildcard doubles spots.

On the singles side, four players will represent the Huskies (1-7 Pac-10, 13-10 overall). Senior Ilona Kordonskaya headlines a group that includes No. 49 Darija Klaic, No. 78 Claire Carter and Colleen Grey. Last year, Carter excelled at the championships, reaching the quarterfinal round.

The doubles side will feature Carter and Klaic for the Huskies, who are ranked 25th in the nation. Also competing in doubles action is the team of Grey and freshman Dea Sumantri.

This weekend is especially important for Carter and Klaic who, with good showings, will qualify for next month's NCAA championships in both singles and doubles competition.

On the other side of the court ...

Coming off last weekend's 5-2 win against Oregon, the No. 34 men's tennis team hopes to salvage a losing conference record before entering postseason play.

The singles tournament is built up of four players from each school entered in the competition. The 32-player draw begins today at 8 a.m.

Last year's championship ran amuck with Dillon Ruby and Ari Strasberg's talent. Ruby advanced to the semifinals of the Invitational Championships where he was defeated by Stanford's Scott Lipski 6-0, 6-2. Ruby also advanced to the semifinals in doubles with Strasberg, though they eventually suffered defeat to Arizona State's Oliver Carroin and Pim Van Mele.

The Huskies finished their regular season (3-4, 17-6) with last week's win to tie for fifth with Arizona (3-4, 12-9). UCLA (6-1, 19-4) claimed top honors. Last year, the UW took fourth place in the Pac-10 for a school record.

After last year's impressive regular season, the team went on to an even better postseason as it advanced to the Sweet 16 and rounded out the year with only one post-season loss to UCLA 4-1.
