The Washington women's golf team finally managed to escape from its seventh-place position in the Pac-10 championship Wednesday at the Walla Walla Country Club. The Huskies were only able to tie for fifth place, with USC scoring 909, just one stroke off Arizona State and California, which were tied for third place with 908.

Running away with the title was Arizona with a score of 891, while second place was grabbed by UCLA, eight shots behind.

Sophomore Lindsay Morgan finished in sixth place, just ahead of junior Louise Friberg, who completed the last round in seventh. It was the first time two Huskies have placed themselves in the top-10 together in the same season at the Pac-10s.

Morgan shot a 74 to finish with a score of 222. Friberg tied the highest-score mark for an 18-hole round in the tournament with a 70.

"I am happy about my finish, but I didn't reach my goal, which was to shoot a 68," Friberg said.

The top winner of the tournament was Edmonds-native and ASU-sophomore Jimin Kang. She upset the tournament's top player, Arizona's Lorena Ochoa, by one stroke, 216 to 217.

Washington now turns its attention to the regional tournament.

"We are disappointed about our finish," Friberg said. "But it has motivated us to become more excited to shoot some good scores at (NCAA) regionals."

No. 11 men's golf starts tourney today

There is a good reason why the Washington men's golf team is feeling good about the upcoming Pac-10 championship tournament in Corvallis, Ore., at the Trysting Tree.

The Huskies have three different players who have all been top finishers at tournaments this season. Senior Gordy Scutt won the Vandal Classic, junior Conner Robbins the Western Invitational and sophomore Brock Mackenzie snatched two titles at The Prestige and the Cleveland Classic.

The Pac-10 championship holds a total of four rounds with 36 today and 18 over the weekend.

"Our game plan is to try not to make any big numbers but just limit the mistakes that we make," Mackenzie said.

Washington is scheduled to tee off at around 7:54 a.m. with UCLA at the 10th tee.
