Women finished with singles as men play on
April 26, 2002
After a dominating first round which saw three of the four Husky tennis players winning their singles matches, the competition proved to be too tough as every UW singles player was eliminated after the first day of the Pac-10 championships.
Highlighting a successful first round for the Huskies was junior Colleen Grey, who upset No. 74 Petya Marinova of UCLA in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Also posting straight-set wins for the Huskies were senior Ilona Kordonskaya and sophomore Claire Carter. Kordonskaya defeated Emila Anderson of Stanford 6-1, 6-1, while Carter defeated Joslynn Burkett of Arizona State 6-2, 7-5.
The only first-round loss for the Huskies was No. 49 Darija Klaic, who struggled with her injured ankle in losing to No. 77 Jiuen Jacobs of California 6-1, 6-7, 6-2. Klaic, who has struggled with her ankle all season long, now finds herself on the bubble for a seeding in the NCAA championships after her first-round loss.
The second round proved to be tough for the Huskies as all three remaining players were eliminated, but it didn't come without a fight. Kordonskaya was defeated by Dianne Hollands of Arizona 6-4, 6-3, but the other two matches went three sets.
Colleen Grey had the best chance to pull off the upset as she took on No. 13 Lauren Barnikow of Stanford. Grey took the first set 6-2 and forced a tiebreak in the second set. Barnikow took the tie in the second set 7-5 and then shut out Grey 6-0 in the third set to win the match.
Claire Carter gave a top-ranked opponent a huge scare as well. Going up against No. 7 Jewel Peterson of USC, Carter came back to win the second set 6-3 after dropping the first set. Peterson narrowly edged Carter 7-5 in the final set to escape with the victory.
Even though all four Huskies were eliminated after the second round, they gained some major confidence heading into today's doubles action.
Hanlin, Vlaski advance to quarterfinals
Junior Matt Hanlin and freshman Alex Vlaski both dug up wins at Libbey Park in Malibu, Calif.
Hanlin made easy meat of his two opponents in the first round. Tom Lloyd of Arizona fell to Hanlin's rabid ferocity in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Hanlin continued to paw away at the competition in a similar two-set demolition against USC's Prakash Amiritraj 7-5, 6-4.
In his opening match, Vlaski attacked Oregon's Martin Pawlowski and tore him up in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Stanford's Scott Lipsky, Vlaski's next opponent, played fetch for Vlaski's tennis ball for three 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
Peter Scharler, Nick Weiss and Scott Felsenthal all hung their heads low as they were eliminated in the first round.
