Excess property an exciting find
May 29, 2002
On the southwest end of campus, used -- but still usable -- UW property sits in a warehouse, waiting to be appraised and then find a new home.
The warehouse is a treasure chest where departments, government organizations, non-profit organizations and the public can find and purchase used surplus property.
Common surplus items available at the warehouse include wood and metal furniture (desks, bookcases, tables, chairs and file cabinets), computer monitors, printers, TVs, bicycles and other various office supplies.
Most of the property comes from UW departments that have determined they have personal property they no longer need. Items approved by the warehouse staff are appraised and first made available to other UW departments, followed by non-profit organization ,and then to the general public.
According to Teresa Seyfried, operations manager of the surplusproperty program, 80 percent of surplus property is sold to the public, generally through public auctions.
Recently, however, the public gained access to the property through a newly opened storefront. The store will be opened once a month on the third Tuesday of each month.
