Done signs with Orioles
June 4, 2002
UW senior Michael Done signed with the Baltimore Orioles Sunday night after the Huskies were eliminated from postseason play by the Rice Owls 14-2.
Done, who will graduate next Saturday with a general studies degree in marketing, was drafted by Cal Ripken Jr.'s former team last year in the 40th round of the MLB draft as the 1,193rd overall pick. The Orioles kept Done on waivers for the year because he wanted to continue his education at the UW. The team had until yesterday to sign Done or else he would be eligible for this year's draft, which starts today.
"It's been pretty exciting," Done said. "I might be sent down to extended spring training for a week."
But don't expect to see Done trot around Camden Yards anytime soon. While Done's new home field has yet to be determined by the Orioles management, the third baseman from Littleton, Colo., could play for the Bluefield Orioles, a minor league team in Bluefield, W.Va.
Sunday night's loss came right after junior Jay Garthwaite belted a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to force the Owls into the winner-take-all nightcap.
"We did the best we could," Done said. "Now it's time to go to the next chapter in my life, which is in professional baseball."
Done signed a standard contract with the Orioles, which doesn't specify the number of years he will be in the pros. He will earn a monthly salary in the minor leagues.
The Huskies' previous best draft day was in 1998, when four Huskies were selected in the first five rounds.
