Police Beat Snack attack

At 9:20 p.m. on May 27, a complainant reported that a UW Medical Center snack vending machine had been broken into.

The damage estimate was unknown at the time of the report. About one week before, the same machine was broken into. It had been repaired just days before the most recent incident.

Banner burglar

Sometime between the evening of May 24 and the morning of May 28, two informational banners were taken from the chain-link fence surrounding the Suzzallo Library construction area.

The respective banners said "Suzzallo Renovation Project Summer, 2000 - Summer 2002" and "Suzzallo Library Still Open for Business!"

The total estimated loss is $800.

Rockin' after midnight

On May 24 at 3:30 a.m., two officers responded to a campus housing noise complaint.

Complainants told the officer a nearby apartment resident frequently blasts his music in the early morning hours and has been asked several times to lower the volume.

One officer knocked loudly on the man's residence door; there was no response. The door was unlocked, so they entered "to check on the welfare" of the subject.

The apartment was dark. After searching inside, they found the man lying asleep in bed, music still blaring. Officers said they had a hard time waking up the man and he appeared to have been drinking.

They warned him about the loud music and informed him of his neighbor's complaint.

Skate or die

On May 29 at 4:15 p.m., an officer observed a young male "performing jumps and tricks" on his skateboard in Red Square.

The officer contacted the man and informed him that recreational skateboarding is prohibited on campus.

The skater said he was new to the area and didn't know about the rule.

After advising the man of the criminal trespass code, the officer showed the skater a nearby sign detailing the rule.

The skater said he understood, and left the area.

The Police Beat is compiled from actual University of Washington Police Department incident reports. Special thanks to Cindy Wiest, UWPD lead dispatch.
