'Biker Boyz' bottles banality

Most car, airplane and motorcycle movies are ridiculous. The bad science integral to the plot ruins any chance of enjoyment; it's usually as if the rules of reality don't apply to the story.

Biker Boyz manages to do much better than most gasoline flicks. Boyz departs from films like The Fast and the Furious in several ways, the most important being that it has a plot.

Boyz also has a soul. While there is plenty of violence and booty to go around, all of the violence and most of the booty -- and indeed, many of the bike stunts -- have a point. Aided by a beautifully shot opening sequence, an underground motorcycle drag-racing society was made believable.

The Kid (Derek Luke) is the 18-year-old son of the leader of the best motorcycle organization, (not gang) in California. When tragedy strikes, the club's right-hand man, Smoke (Laurence Fishburne), takes over. The Kid decides to challenge Smoke for the leadership of the organization, and mayhem ensues. It sound trite, but isn't bad.

The actors all performed well; the lead actors played their roles convincingly. The supporting actors all worked well together, notably, the performance of Kid Rock as "Dogg."

Boyz isn't perfect. A few of the lines blow away the corn-o-meter. In the end, Boyz is a movie of contradictions: a colorblind, sexy movie that isn't lascivious. In short, Biker Boyz is a racing movie that doesn't suck.
