Exploring Seattle's arts scene

Do you ever find yourself pressing your face to the glass to get a glimpse inside all those snazzy high-class art galleries in Pioneer Square? Tired of leaving your nose-print residue on storefronts? The first Free Thursday Gallery Walk could be your all-expense-paid pass to enter into the mysterious world of the hobnobbing who's who in Seattle's art kingdom.

Every month, tribes of students traipse Downtown, busing it through the labyrinth of mighty skyscrapers in order to sense some of the artistic essence in the Pioneer Square air. From FIGs to groups of honors students, making it to the gallery walk tops scholars' list of things to do in Seattle.

"Personally, I think it's cool that people our age take an interest in the art," said junior honors student Claire Suni. "It's part of an opportunity that's available and it's cool that people take the time to do this together."

Titillating new exhibitions will open for the next gallery walk on Feb. 6. Both the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) and Seattle Asian Art Museum's (SAAM) permanent collections are free all day. Like a timid southern belle, SAM's new Jacob Lawrence exhibit will debut on Feb. 6 with reduced entry prices costing students a mere $2 with student ID.

Art galleries across Pioneer Square will also fling open their doors from 6 to 8 p.m. to the masses. Some galleries even provide complementary hors d'oeuvres and wine.

New exhibits for February include The Global Art Venue's A Study of Symbolic Sensuality and the Davidson Galleries' Alexander Petrov exhibit.
