UW juices Apple Cup
October 31, 2003
The nearly $300 million-a-year Washington-based Tree Top cooperative, which primarily makes apple food products, is expected to announce next month its sponsorship of the Apple Cup starting with the 2004 competition. The sponsorship is predicted to change the official name of the state competition to Tree Top Apple Cup.
Though both the juice company and the UW declined to comment on the agreement, the October issue of TreeTopics, a Tree Top publication, comments on the sponsorship, according to a Seattle Times article published yesterday.
"Beginning with the 2004 game, Tree Top is the first sponsor ever of the prime football rivalry in the state of Washington, and it will be known as the Tree Top Apple Cup. The announcement will be made this November as part of the flurry of activities in the week preceding the game," the Times article quoted the Tree Top publication as saying.
According to TreeTopics, the Apple Cup has had its name since 1962 and has never in its history had a sponsor.
A news conference is scheduled for Nov. 17, just five days before this year's Apple Cup at the UW, according to a Tree Top representative quoted in the Times article.
