AAUP calls for open search
December 10, 2003
The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is circulating an open letter to the faculty calling for the UW Board of Regents to "lift the veil of secrecy" concerning the presidential search, according to James Gregory, UW AAUP president.
"The secrecy surrounding the search seems excessive, and we're hoping the regents will understand that," said Gregory.
He added that the AAUP is considering distributing the letter among students and classified staff to sign as well.
According to the letter, "We (the AAUP) understand the need for confidentiality in personnel matters, especially in the early stages of a search. We urge you to take steps to make information about the final slate of candidates available in a timely fashion to include the broader campus community in the search process."
The letter calls for the Presidential Search Committee to allow prospective UW presidents to come to campus and spend time talking with students and staff before the regents make a decision.
"It's a very simple request and I think it's totally reasonable," said Gregory. "We're not asking for veto power. We'd like these candidates to come to campus for some kind of forum so students could see who they are."
