Forum to draw students, cops
December 10, 2003
Since classes began in September, students have seen police officers on horseback, in patrol cars, on bicycles and on foot patrolling the area north of campus. The increased police presence is just one of several topics open for discussion at a forum this afternoon about the relationship between UW students and the police.
Members of the Seattle Police Department (SPD) and UW Police Department (UWPD) will present how they see their role on campus and answer questions from students at the forum today at 3:30 p.m. in HUB 108.
Hillary Madsen, ASUW director of programming, and the ASUW Crime Prevention Committee planned the forum after the Sept. 28 riot, which left a Volvo overturned and a mattress in flames north of campus. No UW students have been connected with responsibility for the riot.
Madsen said the police are scrutinizing students to a degree they are not used to.
She emphasized that the increased police presence has not prevented such incidents as a rape near the Burke Museum, a stabbing at the Theta Chi fraternity, arsonists burning part of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and a young woman being abducted at gunpoint in the parking lot beneath Red Square.
Madsen, who lives in the Alpha Xi Delta sorority, said the increased police presence affects all students who live north of campus, not just members of fraternities or sororities.
"We have more police officers, and we're not feeling more safe," she said.
