Patrols extended
December 5, 2003
After meeting with administrators from the Student Affairs and Regional Affairs offices yesterday, the UW Police Department decided to maintain its heightened post-riot police presence north of campus until June 2004, according to Chief of Police Vicky Peltzer.
The Seattle Police Department (SPD) will also keep up its efforts, Peltzer said.
According to Peltzer, the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs reported that students and leaders of the Greek system wanted extra police patrols to continue.
Three-person "incident prevention teams," consisting of a UWPD officer, an SPD officer and an agent from the Liquor Control Board, will continue patrolling on selected weekends. Peltzer did not confirm specific dates.
While the three-person teams will be patrolling this month, Peltzer said they will do so at unannounced times.
"The teams will be out on weekends when we think it is important," said Peltzer. "They will not necessarily be out every weekend, but they will definitely continue through the end of the school year."
It was originally planned that incident team patrols would stop after Nov. 22. However, the strategy has been re-evaluated recently by UW administrators and the UWPD, according to Assistant Chief Ray Wittmier.
"Things certainly appear to be more under control from what they were. I think there have been some improvements," said Wittmier.
The UWPD earmarked about $8,900 for incident-prevent teams this quarter.
