For the UW sophomore tennis standout Alex Vlaski, last weekend was full of highs that came just short of the peak. Vlaski played every day of the five-day NCAA singles championship in Athens, Ga., traveling to the semifinals -- the first Husky to do so in four years.
His low came in a Sunday match up against No. 3 Amer Delic, seeded third, of national-champion Illinois. Vlaski fell 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 to close out his season with a 37-8 mark. His season victories stopped two shy of the school's single-season record, held by Cret Crile, and set in 1992-93. The semifinals appearance assures Vlaski of his first all-American honors.
On Friday, Vlaski quickly downed top-seeded Bobby Reynolds of Vanderbilt 7-5, 7-6. Vlaski defeated Reynolds earlier in the year at the All-American Championships in October. The victory moved him up to quarterfinal play, where he topped No. 14 Rameez Junaid of Auburn with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 comeback win Saturday.
Vlaski will be the sixth men's tennis player in Husky history to become an all-American, which will add to his other accomplishments on the year, including appearances in the Pac-10 singles final, the ITA regional finals, the ITA National Indoor Championships quarterfinals and the semifinals of the All-American Championships.
