A plane carrying UW faculty and a student broke the guy wire of a Coast Guard navigation tower in Alaska last week.

The group of seven professors and a graduate student chartered the twin-engine plane to travel to the UW's Archaeological Field School on Sitkalidak Island for a six-week dig. The wire broke when the plane flew too close to the 650-foot tower June 24, according to The Associated Press.

No one was injured during the incident, and the plane continued to the village of Old Harbor, 10 miles west of the school.

The Coast Guard uses the long-range navigation tower to direct land, air and marine traffic. The tower, located at Narrow Cape in southern Alaska, was shut down for about two hours for repairs.
