Korean program seeks support to stay alive

While the Korean studies program at the Jackson School of International Studies is historically one of the finest of its kind in the country, its financial troubles have forced the program to find funding or face termination.

With the UW in a financial bind, the program has been unable to replace a historian who retired two years ago. The program received a grant of $50,000 from the Korean government, but the grant required that the UW come up with matching funds.

"We've probably trained more Korean history Ph.Ds than any other college," said Korean studies chair Clark Sorenson. "We have some graduates teaching at Stanford, some at Harvard. We have the second-best Korean library in the country -- second only to Harvard -- with 70,000 books in our collection."

Backed by Seattle's growing Korean-American community, the program is hosting a fund-raising kick-off July 22 at 6 p.m. in the UW Faculty Club. The event will feature speakers, master's students and Jackson School faculty.

The UW is host to the largest Korean-American student population in the country at around 2,500, according to Sorenson.
