The next step in Rick Neuheisel's appeal process to regain status as Husky football coach won't likely be open to the public.

Neuheisel appealed his firing to Norm Arkans, associate vice president of University relations, last week. Arkans expressed doubt that the hearing would be an open one.

"These are personnel matters, and as far as I can tell, they are private matters," he said.

Neuheisel's attorneys filed the appeal last week. Arkans, who recently returned from a vacation in Italy, expects the hearing to take place sometime next week.

"We're going to do it as expediently as we can," he said.

UW Athletic Director Barbara Hedges fired Neuheisel June 11 for his suspected violation of NCAA gambling rules and for allegedly misleading investigators when they questioned him June 4. He has since protested his termination with Hedges, who said he was fired with just cause.
