Spotlight: Matthews Beach

With the temperatures reaching into the 90s, Matthews Beach on Sandpoint is a refreshing place where visitors can swim both day and night.

During the day, people lay out, attempting to add a little color to their white, Seattleite skin. The nighttime crowd enjoys the unusually warm water, the stars and, most of all, the diving boards.

There are one- and three-meter diving boards on a wooden dock a short distance from the shore. These provide a place for swimmers to exhibit both belly flops and, for those who can, flips. You don't have to worry about swimming alone because Matthew's Beach is popular -- as one group of people leaves, another is swimming out to enjoy the fun.

One helpful precaution is to .t.ake a shower once you get home -- it might just feel good and rinse off any mysterious Lake Washington residue that might be on your skin.
