Laptops stolen from Sieg

An estimated $14,000 in UW computing equipment was stolen from inside Sieg Hall early this week.

The equipment included four laptops and accessories such as power adaptors and network cards, according to UW Police Department (UWPD) Sgt. David Girts. He added that a fifth laptop could also have been stolen, but police have yet to speak with the laptop's owner to see if it's missing.

The equipment was taken from a first-floor computer lab in Sieg.

"We're not exactly sure of how the person got in," said Girts. "There's a sign forced entry was involved."

When police arrived, there was no immediate sign of forced entry. Police later found a broken window, but could not determine what broke it. Police also found fingerprints and sent them to be analyzed. Girts said the UWPD would receive the results in at least two weeks.

The theft probably occurred sometime between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, Girts said. He added that the last people in the lab left at 6:30 Monday evening, and no one entered it until 9 Tuesday morning.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering started to move from Sieg Hall to the new Allen Center for Computer Science and Engineering earlier this month. The building will be open for classes in September.
