UW swimmers lead club team to win sectional championship
July 30, 2003
Kim Harada and Luke Ekhoff's individual performances highlighted an off-season victory for the UW swimming program Friday.
A club team of Washington swimmers won the Four Corners Sectional Championship in Seattle, a preliminary event to an open national competition in December. The team defeated 36 clubs representing 11 states. Local team Mt. Hood Swim Club finished in second place.
Harada won the 50, 100 and 200 long course freestyle races. She joined Desiree Johnson, Lisa Fanning and Melody Staubitz to win the 200 freestyle relay. Harada placed fourth in the 100 freestyle at the NCAA swimming and diving championships in March.
"Kim was awesome," said coach Mickey Wender. "Her performances ... were great indicators of where she's at."
Ekhoff finished first in his signature event, the 200 breaststroke. He finished in 20th in the same event at the NCAA championships. Derek Rose, Justin Adrian and Jim Wolfe teamed up with Ekhoff to win the 200 and the 400 medley relays Friday.
"I'm really proud of our 400 medley relay team," said Wender. "They really stepped up on the fifth day of a very long meet, and that was a character-building experience."
The Huskies are preparing for the U.S. Open in Federal Way Dec. 4 to 6. The team, sponsored by Starbucks, consists of 21 UW swimmers, including some incoming freshmen.
