Former UW president McCormick mugged in New Jersey
August 13, 2003
Richard McCormick, former UW and current Rutgers University president, emerged unscathed after being mugged early Saturday evening outside a New Jersey store.
McCormick was departing a New Brunswick, N.J., liquor store when a man accosted him, demanding money.
"I wasn't injured in the slightest -- not even a scratch on my finger, let alone a black eye," McCormick wrote in an e-mail to The Daily, refuting earlier reports that the robber had given him a shiner.
A scuffle arose when McCormick attempted to hand over his wallet, according to bystander Rafael Damo of Howell, N.J. According to Damo, the assailant swung at McCormick but missed.
Damo, a Rutgers senior majoring in psychology, had no idea who he was helping when he drove McCormick away from the scene and called 911.
The robber took $400 McCormick, according to New Brunswick police. No arrests have been made.
McCormick left the UW to become president of Rutgers in December 2002.
