Huskies clobber at Sundodger
September 29, 2003
For the first time since 2000, both Husky men and women's cross-country teams won the Sundodger Invite at the flat terrain of Lincoln Park in West Seattle Sunday.
While the Husky men beat a distant second-place Eastern Washington by 69 points to win the meet, the Husky women stopped teams that coach Greg Metcalf deemed "tough" -- winning by 17 points over its most evenly matched foe, Idaho.
"Idaho's women's team is pretty good; they came in here thinking they were going to beat us," Metcalf said. "Our freshman kids came to rock and roll, I was pleased with our day."
Freshman Husky Amy Lia finished seventh overall in the five-mile run in 17 minutes and 26 seconds, exactly one second ahead of teammate Lindsey Egerdahl.
It was just the second race of her UW career, but Lia said she simply came to run hard.
"I didn't have any goals, I was just out there going," said Lia. "I felt pretty good, but it was a really easy course because it was flat; it was my kind of race."
Senior Eric Garner finished third overall in the men's 8,000-meter race in 24 minutes and 10 seconds to lead all collegiate athletes, while redshirt freshman Travis Boyd placed fifth.
Led by John Russell, seven Huskies finished in domino fashion from ninth to 15th place to total nine Huskies in the top 20 for both squads. Although the season is early, Garner, who was the top Husky finisher in all but one race a season ago, said everyone showed improvement Saturday.
"Everybody [had personal record] by 10 or 15 seconds from last year. We are a lot more fit, we trained smarter," Garner said. "It's nice to start the season off like this, it is an easier course, but it's a stepping stone for the cross-country season."
They will have time to practice, since the Husky men will be idle until Oct. 18 at the pre-national meet in Waterloo, Iowa. In the meantime the Husky women will attempt to carry their momentum from the Sundodger victory over to the Midwest at Notre Dame this Saturday.
"At Notre Dame we're going to run against the top-20 teams in the country," Metcalf said. "Right now, I think we can be one of those teams."
