Schoolyard and Coheed frighten up weekend
October 28, 2004
With Halloween in a few days, the action in the clubs is about to get frighteningly fun, in a good way, of course. If you can overlook that Halloween falls on a Sunday this year, which means all the good shows will be happening Saturday, then you're bound to find something ghoulishly enjoyable to do for Halloween.
Treat yourself to a little bit of jazz tonight at the Showbox. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, a band that recently recorded with Issaquah's Modest Mouse for the band's platinum-selling Good News For People Who Love Bad News, is performing tonight along with North Mississippi All Stars and the Rising Star Fife and Drum Band for a 21-and-older show that costs $16. The ticket averages out to less than $5.50 per band, so get a little swing in your step and head to the show.
On Saturday, The Night of the Living Vera is sure to offer up scares during an all-ages show at the Vera Project. The bill includes the UW's own Schoolyard Heroes and as per the spooky band's Halloween tradition, band members will be dressing up in bloody, scary costumes. Club Connection's inside source said the band will show up as the dead Ramones, meaning zombie-like mop-topped NYC punks. Maybe the band will play an extra special Halloween cover of "Blitzkrieg Bop." The show also includes Kyles, Gods Amongst Men, We Are 138 and others. For $8 it is sure to be a dreadfully delectable night.
Also performing Saturday is progressive punk band Coheed and Cambria at Premier for $17. If you're a fan of Canadian prog-rockers Rush or if you've never heard of Rush and want to know what they sound like, catch this show. If you're broke you can always play Rush's "2120" and Coheed's "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth Vol. 3" back to back for aural enjoyment.
Halloween night one of the coolest chicks in rock, PJ Harvey, will be at the Showbox for a 21-and-older show that will cost $30. Rounding out the week are two excellent shows Monday and Tuesday nights. Punk rock revivalists Hot Snakes will be at Neumo's Monday for $12, and hip-hop spoken word poet Saul Williams performs at the same venue Tuesday for $13.
Until next week, see you in the clubs.
