Rebuild fetters athletes

Making adjustments and being flexible (not just physically), is an important part of being an athlete, even if it means giving up a little space.

The complete reconstruction of the Conibear Shellhouse has forced athletes and faculty alike to rearrange their eating, studying and, for some, practicing schedules and locations. The crew team especially has taken the brunt of this process, but they are making the best of what they have.

"We usually function completely out of the [Conibear Shellhouse], but now we have to hold everything outside," said Erica Schwab, novice coach for women's crew. "The weather can definitely be a challenge, but the teams are making due the best they can."

Since 1949, Conibear Shellhouse has been the main location for the crew teams, as well as many other athletes, to practice, study and eat.

Since the groundbreaking in December 2003, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has needed to relocate most of its academic services and offices to Graves Hall and Hec Edmundson Pavilion. After practice, athletes head home to eat instead of staying for their usual team meals at the Shellhouse.

"Because of the remodel, the options for team meals this year have been limited," said Suzanne Steen, UW sports nutritionist. "I've been doing a lot of teaching 'Boiling Water 101' to help athletes get through the transition."

The athletic department is scheduling tutoring and academic time in other facilities such as Mary Gates Hall when room is limited in the Graves Building.

"We're really lucky to have space and support from the Athletic Department," said junior Erin Lee, a rower for the varsity women's crew team. "They realize that we are students first, and have been doing a great job to accommodate our needs."

Although the teams aren't able to share the extra bond of the Conibear Shellhouse, team unity hasn't been significantly affected since the new season.

"I think most of us are just really excited to be sharing something new together. Soon we'll be moving into a new home, which is an extra special bond among us," said Lee.

Regardless of inconveniences, athletes and staff are looking forward to the new facility which will include a dining area overlooking Lake Washington, a deck for outdoor seating and plenty of space for academic programs such as study tables, tutoring rooms and a new computer lab. Schwab especially has a very positive outlook for this season.

"Spring time for the new Conibear Shellhouse will be perfect since it kicks off the crew season. I think all of us are willing to suffer a little because in the end, the rewards will be much greater."
