UW Crew opens season at Portland Loop

Washington men's and women's crew start the fall season tomorrow at the 16th annual Portland Loop Regatta.

The Huskies are sending four crews to the event on the Willamette River, with the featured races beginning at 10:30 a.m. While the men's and women's varsity eights will compete in the Championship Eight races, the junior varsity eights will be competing for the Collegiate Eight title.

The regatta's races differ from the 2,000-meter courses normally seen in collegiate racing. Teams will line up single-file at set intervals with the races conducted in time-trial format.

Washington will try to duplicate last year's performance, when the Huskies won all three events entered, all by margins exceeding 30 seconds. The only race the UW did not win was the Collegiate Eight, due to the JV crew being promoted after the varsity's crew shell broke in practice.

The men's varsity looks to make amends this year, compounded by the fact that they return three members of last year's Pac-10 championship boat -- seniors Scott Gault and Giuseppe Lanzone and junior Scott Schmidt.

The Portland Loop is the first of Washington's two fall races. The final event of the season is the Head of the Lake Regatta held Nov. 14 on Lake Union.
