The Washington women's basketball team opens pre-season play with an exhibition against the Baden Sports. The game will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

The prospect of competition beyond facing each other and the team's white squad (a group of men who suit up opposite the team in practice) has the Dawgs chomping at the bit.

"Everyone is really excited to get out there and work on what we've been working on," said junior Kristen O'Neill. "For me, it's been a long time, so I can't wait to put that jersey on."

O'Neill suffered a stress fracture in her left foot before last season got underway, forcing her to red-shirt for the season.

"The injury has been a long process," she said. "I'm ready to give it a go. I'm excited to get out there and push it a bit."

Sophomore forward Maggie O'Hara said she is looking forward to the reuniting of O'Neill and junior Kayla Burt, who red-shirted last season due to a heart condition.

"I can't wait to get Kristen and Kayla on the court," O'Hara said. "We'll get to see how our rotations work, and the coaches will get to see how different lineups play together."

The senior-less Husky squad has five freshmen to throw in the lineup, while implementing its new running offense and trapping defense.

So far, the upper classmen think the new Huskies are fitting in just fine.

"The freshmen are really molding with our run-and-gun offense," O'Hara said. "They're really picking up all the stuff we're learning."

O'Neill agreed, saying the freshmen have exceeded expectations so far.

"They're really hardworking and eager to learn the system," O'Neill said. "For freshmen, that's more than you can ask for."

The UW will not play another game until Nov. 8, when they take on Vanguard University in another exhibition. Because of the exhibitions, the players and coaches have recognized the value of being able to evaluate where they stand.

"It'll show us what we need to work on and what we've mastered," O'Hara said. "This team is really capable and excited. The fans are going to see a new side of Husky basketball."
