Washington shocks Stanford, stunned by Cal

The Washington men's soccer team saw its unbeaten streak snapped at six games at the hands of California, falling 1-0 in double overtime Sunday.

The No. 5 Huskies (11-4-2 overall, 4-1-1 Pac-10) opened the weekend with a 1-0 victory over Stanford last Friday.

Yesterday's game was not decided until the 107th minute, when a loose ball scramble coming from a shot off the cross bar culminated with Cal forward Calen Carr burying a shot into the back of the net.

The victory by the Golden Bears (11-3-2, 3-3-1) splits the season series between the two squads, since the Huskies blanked Cal 3-0 Oct. 8.

Junior midfielder Jeff Hoover had a chance to win it for the Huskies in the first overtime period when he broke away from the Cal defense, only to be stopped by goalkeeper Erin Kronberg.

Last Friday against the Cardinal (7-4-5, 2-3-2), it was Washington who provided the drama late in the match.

Hoover made his first goal of the season a game-winner, knocking home a cross pass from sophomore Will Flanagan at the 88:12 mark.

When the teams battled in Seattle earlier this month, the game ended a 2-2 draw after two overtimes.

The shutout was the 10th for junior goalkeeper Chris Eylander this season as he recorded three saves vs. the Cardinal.

In each game, head coach Dean Wurzberger felt the Huskies had plenty of scoring opportunities, but were unable to convert.

"We didn't finish our chances today (vs. Cal)," he said. "A freak goal against us, we'll just have to accept."

Wurzberger added that now was a better time to suffer a tough defeat from a freak goal than in the postseason, as this one did not put an end to their season.

Starters Kevin Forrest and Casey Armstrong both suffered hamstring injuries over the weekend and neither played Sunday.

Regardless of the offensive woes, Wurzberger was pleased to come away from the last two-game week of the season with a split.

"We're exactly where we want to be," Wurzberger said.

The Huskies have two matches remaining before postseason play begins, starting Friday night in Seattle against UCLA.

If Washington wins both matches, they will guarantee themselves a Pac-10 championship -- one of the team's main goals for the season.
