Half of ATDI is better than no ATDI

Everyone wonders what happens to highly influential bands when they break up. Every once in a while a band will dissolve and some of its members will morph into a corporatized commodity such as the post-Rage Against the Machine-Soundgarden mixture that is Audioslave. Other times band members stay true to their roots and continue to create influential and challenging music.

The second option is what happened when El Paso, Texas punk band At The Drive-In (ATDI) called it quits a few years back. For those unaware, two of the band's members (the pair who will forever be known as the ones with afros) formed the progressive rock band The Mars Volta. The other two members of ATDI went in a completely different direction and formed Sparta.

Sparta's sound is less challenging than The Mars Volta and is borderline mainstream rock, which is something ATDI definitely was not. However, the mainstream styling of the band landed it an opening slot on Incubus' summer tour as well as a spot on the main stage of the Coachella Valley Music Festival in Indio, Calif. earlier this year. The band is supporting its second major label record, Porcelain, and will be performing Monday at the Showbox along with Further Seems Forever and Copeland for $15.

On the other side of the rock spectrum is red-hared alt-country vixen Neko Case. She is performing twice this weekend at Neumo's for $15 advance and $17 day of show. Case, a member of the popular indie band The New Pornographers, was voted sexiest women in indie rock by the readers of Playboy magazine recently. However, to the dismay of horny indie rock fans everywhere, she turned down the magazine's offer to pose nude. Apparently, she just reads it for the articles.

Saturday night, Latin funk-jazz-hip-hop band Ozomatli will be at the Showbox spicing things up a bit. The group performed at Hec Edmundson Pavilion in May as a part of Spring Fling and led a conga line through the crowd and into the foyer of the venue. It was a rollicking good time, which means Saturday night's show should be part dance explosion, part hip-hop spectacle. Tickets cost $18.

Here's to hoping you are able to catch a few shows before finals make leaving the house impossible. Until next week, see you in the clubs.
