The Washington women's basketball team lost in the championship game of the Seattle Times Husky Classic, falling to Alabama 76-56 last Saturday.

The Huskies (3-2) defeated University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (0-3) 86-75 in the opening round Friday.

The Crimson Tide's Marverly Nettles notched 19 points in the championship, giving her 27 for the tournament and earning her MVP honors.

Junior Kristen O'Neill and sophomore Cheri Craddock, who combined for 33 points in the Classic, were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The UW travels to Utah for its next contest Saturday with improvement on its mind.

"I have confidence in the team and the coaching staff that we're going to make the adjustments that we need to prevent this from happening again," O'Neill said following the loss. "I have a lot of pride in this program and confidence in my teammates that we're going to turn this around."

Last Saturday, the UW was outplayed on the boards, with the Tide (4-0) corralling 49 to the Huskies' 23 rebounds

"It was uncharacteristic for us to have only eight offensive boards," coach June Daugherty said. "We have to get more intensity and get more people to the glass. Tonight, we didn't have it, especially in the second half."

The Huskies played to a five-point deficit to start the second half, but never got closer as Alabama went on runs of 8-2 and 9-0 to go up 20 points at 64-42.

In the win Friday, Craddock and O'Neill each scored 14 points. The UW led by as many as 20 points in the second half, but nearly fell victim to hot shooting by UW-Milwaukee. The Panthers hit 17 of their 24 shots in the second half, coming within five points, but the Huskies responded. Over the next minute and a half, the Huskies scored seven points to take the victory.

The Tide made it to the championship game by way of beating Columbia 81-45 in the tournament opener. The Panthers beat Columbia (2-2) 63-59 to win third place in the consolation game early Saturday.

The Huskies play their next three on the road, traveling to Denver following the game against Utah, and then to South Bend to take on Notre Dame. The next home game is not until Dec. 15, when the UW faces Baylor.
