UW interested in Willingham

According to rumors emanating from ESPN, the UW is actively pursuing football coach Tyrone Willingham, who was fired yesterday from Notre Dame.

Notre Dame Athletic Director Kevin White was asked to comment on these rumors, but refused. "You'll need to ask (Willingham) those questions," White said.

Both Willingham and UW Athletic Director Todd Turner were unavailable for comment.

In three years with Notre Dame, Willingham led the Irish to a 21-15 record, including a 6-5 record this season.

Washington finished this season with a program-worst 1-10 record. Keith Gilbertson stepped down as the UW's coach immediately after Washington's 28-25 loss to WSU in the Apple Cup.

The Huskes (24-2 overall, 16-2 Pac-10) begin NCAA Tournament play Friday in Seattle against Idaho.
