Candy Cane Lane

Every year, for as long as I can remember, my parents round up my family after dark on Christmas Eve to tour the city, gazing in awe at the sparkling displays people have painstakingly created of their houses.

For some, putting holiday lights up is not worth the required effort. For others, it is simply a fun way to show some holiday cheer. There are those, though, who put so much time and energy into their holiday light decorations that carloads of people will literally block traffic just to sit and stare in amazement. The residents of Park Road NE, colloquially known as Candy Cane Lane, are shining examples of such exceptional holiday spirit.

In the middle of every December, neighbors on this small road come together to create a spectacular display of holiday lights, plastic Santas, human-sized candy canes, inflatable snowmen and a myriad of other festive decorations. Candy Cane Lane has become such a popular holiday attraction that a sign is posted at the beginning of the month, informing anxious visitors of the date the decorations will be ready for viewing; this year's inaugural lighting was Saturday Dec. 11.

The lane is walking distance from campus: the entrance is at the intersection of 21st Avenue Northeast and Ravenna Blvd. It is well worth the trip - my family and I will be there, like every year, on Christmas Eve.
