New Year's events for 21-plus and underage

Perhaps last New Year's Eve was spent crammed in between five random and disjointed elbows in a bar that ran out of fries, nachos and decent beer. Or, perhaps, as an under-21 student, the prospect of a good party is looking slim. Whatever the situation, never fear; here's a small sampling of the diverse events Seattle offers for New Year's Eve.

All-ages:

New Year's at the Needle

New Year's at the Needle is Seattle's most traditional and biggest event taking place on New Year's Eve. More than 20,000 people gather below the needle to watch fireworks that go off at midnight. Inside, a six-course dinner and champagne are offered for $225 per person. A cheaper Observation Deck party will costs $95 per a person.

St. James Cathedral New Year's Eve Gala

Billed as "Seattle's oldest classical New Year's tradition," St. James Cathedral's chamber choir, orchestra and organists will be performing Purcell's Te Deum and Handel's Dixit Dominus. The suggested donation is $22, students and seniors "pay as able." Seating starts at 10:30 p.m., and the program begins at 11 p.m. Call (206) 382-4874 or visit http://www.stjames-cathedral.org/

Pier 66

Spanning five rooms with three floors of dancing, this is Seattle's biggest 21-and-over bash. This year's entertainment will be provided by the Dudley Manlove Quartet, Soul Provider, Club KISS DJs (106.1 FM), Howard Bulson, Ruby Dee & Snakehandlers, the Wake Fields and the Swains. Cost is $39. The party begins at 8 p.m. and ends at 1:45 a.m. Call (206) 782-2257 for tickets or visit http://www.seattlebash.com/ for more information.

Showbox

Super Diamond and special guest Black Celebration will be performing. Limited advance tickets at TicketsWest or other outlets cost $35. Tickets are $40 day of show and at the door. The event starts at 8 p.m. http://www.showboxonline.com/

Crocodile Cafe

A cheaper alternative to the pricey dance club parties is Crocodile Cafe's New Year's Eve Extravaganza featuring music from Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Cost is $17 in advance, $20 at the door. http://www.thecrocodile.com/
