Huskies visit Midwest, face Illini, Wildcats
February 27, 2004
The Washington women's tennis team hopes to continue its winning ways as it travels to the Midwest for weekend matchups with Illinois and Northwestern.
Last weekend, the Huskies wrapped up a two-game homestand with a 5-2 victory over No. 24 Oregon, moving Washington to 7-1 for the season.
As a result of its victory, Washington moved up one spot in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's nevermind latest rankings -- from fifth to fourth. The ranking is the highest for Washington in the history of the program.
The Huskies have two players ranked in the top 25 of nevermind polls. Junior Dea Sumantri is ranked 23rd and is undefeated in dual-meet singles matches at 7-0. Senior Claire Carter is 25th nationally and teams with Sumantri to compete as the 19th-ranked doubles pair.
Washington first faces Illinois this morning in Urbana. The Illini head into the match with a 4-1 record on the year and are 18th in the polls.
Senior Jennifer McGaffigan is ranked 14th nationally and is Illinois' only ranked player. She teams with junior Cynthia Goulet to form the 7th-ranked doubles team. Illinois' has been knocked out of the NCAA tournament twice by Washington -- in 2001 and 2003 -- both times in Seattle.
The Huskies then travel to Evanston to face Northwestern. The Wildcats are ranked 10th nationally at 7-3 and are undefeated on their home courts. Sophomore Cristelle Grier is the third-ranked player nationally and teams with Jessica Rush -- ranked 67th -- as the third-ranked doubles pair in the country. The Huskies picked up their only win ever against Northwestern last year with a 4-3 victory in Seattle.
After its weekend tour of Illinois, Washington returns to Seattle for a three-game homestand starting March 5 against San Diego.
