The Husky baseball team was unable to sustain its winning ways this weekend at the Riverside Baseball Invitation, beating Sacramento State 4-2, but getting out-slugged 9-8 and 13-8 by UC-Riverside and Oregon State, falling to 6-3 on the season.

Over the weekend, several streaks came to an end. Closer Will Fenton, a no-brainer in the ninth last year, was sitting on a 42.1-inning scoreless stretch coming into Saturday.

He gave up four runs in the top of the ninth to hand the victory to UC-Riverside, breaking the Huskies' six-game winning streak. Keaton Everitt, the star of the Feb. 22 shutout against Gonzaga, coughed up six earned runs on nine hits in just 3.1 innings against OSU. Relievers Joel Villalobos, Matt Kasser and Josh Conover combined to allow seven runs on 10 hits in another 3.1 innings Saturday and yesterday.

While the pitching suffered, the Husky bats stayed hot. Shortstop Brent Lillibridge extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a 5-12 weekend. Senior outfielder Ben Johnson had five hits, including a ringing go-ahead roundtripper in Friday's win.

Freshman starters Richie Lentz and Tim Lincecum continued to battle control issues while lighting up hitters with their dominant arsenals. Lentz won Friday's game with Sacramento State with eight big Ks in five innings and was relieved by fellow freshman Kyle Parker, who struck out five in three no-hit innings.

Lincecum, trying to put the seven walks from his last start behind him, faced the minimum through his first five frames Saturday before loading the bases in the sixth with two walks and a single. Top reliever Trent Baysinger continued to be a force out of the bullpen with two scoreless outings. The senior lefty now has 10 scoreless innings to his credit, with just one walk against seven strikeouts.

The Diamond Dawgs return to Husky Ballpark next weekend for a three-game series with unranked Missouri (8-2). The Tigers have three patient, experienced hitters in seniors Ryan Rallo, Cody Ehlers and Brad Flanders, and an ace starter in junior righty Erik Dessau (3-0, 0.45), however, they have yet to face a Division I opponent.

The Huskies hope to turn things around against Mizzou with a series at Husky Ballpark that begins Friday at 6:30 p.m.
