Softball ends NFCA Leadoff Classic with 1-0 loss
The fourth-ranked Washington softball team lost 1-0 to Central Michigan yesterday, dropping the Huskies to 11-5 on the year and eliminating them from the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga.
Senior All-American Tia Bollinger matched a career high with 12 strikeouts, but her teammates couldn't provide any run support, managing just two hits in the contest. The Chippewas scored the lone run of the game with two outs in the top of the fifth inning.
The loss was the third straight for the Huskies, making it their first three-game skid in tournament play since the 2002 season. Washington fell 7-1 to No. 11 Florida State Saturday morning before suffering a 4-2 loss to No. 12 Louisiana State in the quarterfinals that evening, putting the Huskies in the consolation bracket.
Washington opened tournament play with a 6-2 win over No. 15 Texas and an 8-0 mercy-rule victory over Army that featured back-to-back home runs by junior Kristen Rivera.
Washington makes its first home appearance of the season Thursday when it hosts an exhibition doubleheader against the Canadian National Team. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
