UW splits Midwest swing
March 1, 2004
The No. 4 Washington women's tennis team split its two matches in the Midwest this weekend -- defeating 18th-ranked Illinois 5-2 Friday, but losing to 10th-ranked Northwestern 4-3 Saturday.
The Huskies move to 8-3 on the year after the two-match road trip.
Washington's trip to the Central time zone began with an unpleasant start Friday morning as Illinois (4-2) took two of three doubles matches to gain the lone doubles point. The Huskies' only victory came when the 19th-ranked pair of Claire Carter and Dea Sumantri upset the seventh-ranked duo of Jennifer McGaffigan and Cynthya Goulet 8-3.
Washington bounced back, winning five of six singles matches to gain the win. Sumantri bested 14th ranked McGaffigan in number-one singles, 6-2, 6-1. Dinka Hadzic clinched the Washington victory with her three-serve victory over Goulet, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Washington's match with Northwestern (8-3) Saturday started much like the previous days as the Huskies lost the doubles point -- this time swept in all three matches. Carter and Sumantri were foiled in their second upset attempt, losing to the Wildcats' third-ranked pair of Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush, 8-4.
However, unlike the Illinois matchup, the Huskies could not rebound in their singles matches. Grier, ranked third in singles, defeated Carter in number-one singles, 6-2, 6-4, and Jessie Peisel's 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory over Hadzic sealed the match for the Wildcats.
Despite the loss, Sumantri continued to remain undefeated in singles play in dual matches with her three-set victory over 67th-ranked Rush, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (7).
Washington returns to Seattle for a three-game homestand this weekend outside at Bill Quillian Stadium starting Thursday against No. 64 San Diego.
