Staff editorial: Responsibility in student regency
May 25, 2004
The performance of our student regent, Daya Mortel, at Thursday's Capital Assests Committee meeting was not in the least bit acceptable. At the meeting, Mortel sat in silence due to self-proclaimed ignorance on the issue; she blew any chance students had of having their voice heard on campus parking issues.
Please, Daya, if you are going to represent us, don't make us look like the uninformed students that we aren't. As student regent, it's your responsibility to represent and uphold the desires of the students, not just reflect your personal lack of knowledge of University matters.
Being informed about student issues; hey, that's a good start. Second step, let the Board of Regents know how we feel about those issues.
Of course, in order to communicate such information, one would have to know just what issues the students were concerned about and voice those opinions.
In the future we hope that our appointed student regent will make him or herself more accessible to students -- hopefully on a regular basis -- and as a result, become more informed of students' concerns. It may also be nice if our regent would become sufficiently informed about issues to know the best interest of the students for each particular issue and in the given situation.
We understand that it may be hard to balance the duties of being a college student and a regent at the same time. But we know there is a better balance out there, one we've seen in the past in which both sides are represented equally, at least to a small extent.
